Bible Study, Sunday School, Book Groups
We do not have one consistent learning opportunity, but instead offer short-term small groups, both in-person and online. In the past some of our studies have been on the Gospel of Mark, Death and Dying, the Hebrew scriptures, What the Bible Says about Homosexuality, Covenant, The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone, Dear White Peacemakers, by Osheta Moore, and Inspired by Rachel Held Evans. We often have a study offered during the seasons of Advent and Lent.
As a church whose vision begins, “we gather at God’s table with our neighbors” our fellowship ministry is strong. Every third Sunday after worship is a covered-dish lunch. Bring your favorite dish and join with others around the lunch table. We often gather in the summer for a cookout or Trivia and Tacos Tuesday. In October, we have a church picnic. At Christmas time we serve hot chocolate and cookies at the Woodlawn Tree Lighting. There are often other times we gather to play, eat and build relationships.
Health and Healing Ministries
We believe we are better disciples of Jesus when we are healthy physically and spiritually. Our Health and Healing team prays for those who have needs, sends cards and calls those who are sick or going through a challenging time. Meals are prepared for those who are ill. When someone has a prolonged illness, a care team can be developed to tackle the ongoing needs of the patient and their caretakers.
Most of our ministries for children focus on the young people in our neighborhood. Each year we have an Easter Eggstravaganza, a summer activity, Trunk or Treat, and more for the children and families of Woodlawn. On the third Saturday of the month, we host UAB’s ArtPlay and their pre-school reading and vocabulary program called Vocabby. You can find out more information at alysstephens.org.
Nursery for ages 3 months to 3 years is available by request. Please call the church office if you would need a nursery for an upcoming service or activity.
